The further development of the MoReq standard gives good reason to celebrate. MoReq2010 is superbly structured (in so-called modules), unites theory and practice and is above all increibly readable for all interested parties. You can download the documentation here.
The DLM Forum Triennial Conference in Brussels from December 12th to 14th 2011 was for me, an exciting three days.
The circle of participants at the DLM Forum Triennial Conference consisted mainly of public sector representatives (e.g. management, records managers, document managers, archivists). Experiences and best practices were presented and discussed in the keynotes. This is where the real strength of the DLM Forum shone through – an unbelievably large and practice-oriented treasure chest of experiences on the topic of records management.
However, in personal discussions it quickly became clear, that exactly these organizations have already been operating records management for a long time, have had access to national standards (since historically grown) and have been successfully implementing these standards. The national application of consistent MoReq standards is therefore not realizable overnight.
A transformation of such national standards appears practical, e.g. national extensions in the direction of MoReq. How actively this course will be followed by particpants however, was not clearly deducible from the discussions.
In my opinions, the biggest chance for MoReq implementation with MoReq lies with organizations and companies who aren’t tied to national standards – and definitely in the private sector. The treasure chest of experience of the public sector and its effect on the MoReq2010 standard is pure gold (cash!) for businesses. So why re-invent the wheel?
With MoReq 2010, companies and organizations who have to adhere to compliance demands, who have to fulfil supporting evidence obligations over many years, who are equipped with heterogenous information systems, can find a perfect starting point for any further consideration.
Looking at the roadmap for the MoReq standard, it is due for extension into industry and the private sector. Therefore if a company or organization was to take into consideration the MoReq standard, the adaptation of such specific standards will be quicker and easier to implement.
Europe currently finds itself on an excellent road and the efforts will bear fruits!
